Chief town of the district, a small town of about 3000 inhabitants, 711 meters above sea level, is composed of numerous hamlets located on the sunny side of the Arc. It has long been an important turning point at the intersection of roads leading to Italy (Frejus tunnel 18 km), Tarentaise and Briançon.
At the foot of the great Alpine passes, friendly stations near the gates of the Vanoise National Park, Saint-Michel is located in the heart of the Maurienne and a rich tourist area in all seasons. City stage, it becomes a place to stay for many vacationers through sports and cultural backgrounds and the attractiveness of traditional villages and hamlets.
Many activities are available: tennis, cinema, library, fishing in lakes and rivers, climbing, via ferrata, family outings to explore the villages, wildlife and flora.
