Saint-Mesmes is located in the department of Seine-et-Marne, in the Île-de-France region. It is part of the Community of Communes Plaines et Monts de France.
The first human settlements probably date back to the Neolithic period. The presence of the Beuvronne and the intersection of two land communication routes favor the development of the village. The first written document where Saint Mesmes is cited dates from 1501.
Saint-Mesmes is crossed by an old Roman road which later became the road to the coronation of the Kings of France from Saint-Denis to Reims.
The Patron Saint of the parish is Saint Maxime, a 5th century hermit who lived in Chinon, he was the disciple of Saint Martin. The name changed to Saint-Maixme then to Saint-Mesmes.
