Common of more than 6,500 inhabitants, Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët is nestled in the heart of Normandy, at the crossroads with Brittany and Pays de la Loire, in the department of Manche. Created on January 1, 2016, it was born from the merger of Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët, Saint-Martin-de-Landelles and Virey. It is located about fifteen kilometers from Mortain and about twenty-five kilometers from Avranches and its famous Scriptorial.
Occupied since always, the territory of Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët begins to develop with the arrival of the Vikings in the tenth century and the creation of the Normandy region. Benefiting from a strategic geographical location, the ancient villages of Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët quickly become a stronghold. Third city electrified in France at the end of the nineteenth century, the town is experiencing a boom with the arrival of the railway at the same time.
