The town is located between the Loire and Authion. The first human occupation dates from the Gallo-Roman Saint-Martin-de-la-Place was located on one of the few crossings of the Loire. The development is accelerating the construction of the lifting in the 12th century. Combining agriculture and varied activities related to the river (inland water transport, fisheries), the town experienced its heyday in the 19th century. It has kept its part Loire and offers its visitors a magnificent view on the south bank of the Loire.
