The manor of La Salle is located in the town of Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, in the Dordogne, 24 km north-west of Sarlat-la-Canéda. This is one of the many buildings protected as historical monuments in the locality, which is part of the association of the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
The manor belongs to a group that also includes a square keep to which is attached a corner tower, the keep and the tower being crowned with battlements.
The square tower-keep dates from the 14th century and an adjoining turret encloses a staircase leading to the two floors and the rampart walk. Its roof is made of slate. Windows were enlarged in the 18th century. The mansion itself was built in the 15th century when the fiefdom belonged to the Mârtres family who then participated in the defense of Sarlat against the Huguenots. The whole became the property of the Cheylard family by marriage in 1630.
The manor and the keep form an example of a noble haunt frequent in the Perigord. However, its defensive system is still part of medieval military architecture, before we take into account the contributions from the Italian wars of the 16th century with better parades against modern artillery…
The property is private but its surroundings, close to the Château de Clérans, can be included in the program of a free or guided visit of this village of character.
