Lake Oule is located in the municipality of Saint-Lary-Soulan, in the Hautes-Pyrénées.
To the west of the village, located at an altitude of 1819 m, it covers an area of 50 hectares, and its maximum depth reaches in places 28 m.
This is a lake of artificial origin formed by a dam whose construction was completed in 1922. The capacity of the reservoir was increased after the Second World War to supply a hydroelectric plant whose energy is intended for the network railway.
Supplied in particular by an underground channel connected to Lake Orédon, the lake dominates the Néouvielle valley and is surrounded by peaks such as the Bastan peak, the Quatre Termes peak or the Plat peak.
Before the dam was built, pastures intended for summer pastures, dotted with a few small glacial lakes, occupied this part of the territory.
The site belongs to a nature reserve protected for its biodiversity. A refuge is set up near the dam.
The lake at the heart of its postcard-shaped environment can be the object of a pleasant hike (not presenting any major difficulty), but its surroundings are also accessible in winter by chairlift.
