Saint-Just-en-Chaussée

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Oise

Saint-Just-en-Chaussée is a town in the Oise, in the Hauts-de-France region, 28 km east of Beauvais.

Its territory of some 14 km² extends over a chalky plateau crossed by the Arré valley, a sub-tributary of the Oise. It presents a largely green and rural aspect with 75% of cultivated land and wooded areas (6% of its area).

The site was occupied since Roman Antiquity, located on the route of the via Agrippa connecting Boulogne to Lyon, and in addition, the remains of an important earlier Gallic sanctuary (5th century BC) have been placed. to the day. Fortified in the Middle Ages, the city was then a residence for the bishops of Beauvais who owned a castle there. Its abbey is also famous. However, the locality was burnt down during the Thirty Years' War in 1636 and the abbey was destroyed in 1707.

Today, Saint-Just-en-Chaussée has a little over 6000 inhabitants. Although several industrial units are located there, its green environment and its leisure offer deserve attention.

Things to see and do

Despite the vicissitudes of history, the small town which was again affected during the First War retains some heritage elements of interest. These include the beautiful 19th century town hall and the parish church of Saint-Just (named after a third century martyr), rebuilt in a neo-Gothic style in the 19th century. There are 13th century baptismal fonts saved from the medieval building burnt down by the Spaniards in 1636, as well as a noble 18th century work bench (formerly reserved for members of the factory council). These two elements are protected as objects.

On the other hand, nothing remains of the old fountain where Saint Just was beheaded, nor of the bishops' castle and the old Premonstratensian abbey.

With regard to cultural leisure activities, the village hall and the Delalande hall regularly host associative events, and shows (theater, concerts) are scheduled throughout the year at the Opus hall (inquire at +33 3 44 19 29 29). Activities (meetings, readings, exhibitions) are also offered at the Anne Frank media library (information on +33 3 44 16 35 28). Finally, the Jeanne Moreau municipal cinema programs films for the general public as “arthouse” screenings. Contact on +33 3 44 78 81 62.

For athletes and in particular young tourists and visitors, two city-stadiums, a pump track area and a skate park are accessible in the town. It is also possible to reserve a tennis court with the local club by calling +33 6 81 02 82 70.

Four green spaces located on the territory are suitable for walking in a very pleasant setting. Let us quote the old Naquet property with its park and its pond, which includes the source of the Arré, the whole being classified as a natural site. To the east of the village, the woods of Mermont and the park of the former abbey, near the town's ponds, include marked trails, a picnic area and a course dedicated to orienteering. For fishing enthusiasts, inquire about the regulations on +33 6 76 10 91 24.

It is also possible to join the walking club outings: contact +33 3 44 78 79 26.

For hiking on a larger scale including for example the woods of the town or the Arré valley or even loops dedicated to cycle tourism (route known as "Heaven and agricultural plains of the Oise"), maps and information from the tourism committee on +33 3 64 60 60 60.
