Charming little town in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Saint-Étienne-les-Orgues takes place at the foot of the Lure mountain, on the Route de la Lavande. It is located about forty kilometers from Digne-les-Bains, between Forcalquier and Sisteron.
Originally, two Gallo-Roman villages took place on the territory of Saint-Étienne-les-Orgues, Saint-Étienne and Onègues. Ravaged by the plague in the 14th century, the site gradually fell into ruins, and only Saint-Étienne was slowly repopulated during the 15th century. The town then experienced a new boom around the breeding of sheep and the work of wool which made the wealth of the inhabitants, until the development of medicines made from medicinal and aromatic plants of the mountain of Lure sold until in the middle of the 19th century.
Always surrounded by forests, scrubland and fields of aromatic plants, the town continues to attract passing visitors thanks to its heritage, its small ski resort or its essential lavender oil from Haute-Provence AOC, its honey from Provence. IGP and its Sisteron IGP lamb.
