Fursac is a town in the Creuse, in the New Aquitaine region, south of La Souterraine which it borders.
It was officially created on January 1, 2017 following the merger of Saint-Etienne-de-Fursac (790 inhabitants) and Saint-Pierre-de-Fursac (750 inhabitants) and therefore now has a little more than 1,500 inhabitants.
Bordering Haute-Vienne, the vast territory of 59 km² is crossed by the course of the Gartempe. Green and hilly, it announces the Massif Central.
Before their "marriage", the two once distant villages were already forming a single borough at the end of the 20th century: the churches were close, and the town halls were housed in the same building.
However, in the Middle Ages it was different. The two parishes belonged to distinct political entities to such an extent that Saint-Etienne, in the south, was English and Saint-Pierre, in the north, was French. It was not until 1527 that they were both attached to the kingdom of France!
The agricultural, artisanal and commercial vocation of the locality which includes a number of hamlets is now supplemented by the promotion of a quality heritage. As for its environment, it will delight hikers.
In the former territory of Saint-Etienne, if the parish church of the village has been modified several times and therefore now presents an architecture combining different styles, it is different for the Church of the Decollation of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, on the hamlet of Paulhac, to the south-west. It dates from the 13th century and served a parish as such, coming under a seigneury founded by the Order of the Temple, which became the Order of Saint-Jean-de-Jerusalem. It is therefore a commandery under the Grand Priory of Auvergne. Redesigned in 1449, the massive and austere-looking building is made up of a single five-bay vessel, with ribbed vaults that fall on sculpted columns. The church, listed as a Historic Monument since 1938, is famous for its 13th century wall frescoes. In the immediate vicinity of the former commandery, to the south-east, a chapel dedicated to Saint-Fiacre with a lintel door framed by pinnacles is also remarkable.
Still in the former town of Saint-Etienne, the cross of Saint-Léobon, between the hamlets of La Chaise-Nadaud and Lascaugiraud, the Neuville-Bateau fountain-washhouse, recently restored, and the underground fountain of Paulhac, can also be observed.
Still in terms of heritage, but in the former town of Saint-Pierre, this time, it is advisable to linger at the level of the church protected as historical monuments, and whose oldest parts date back to the 11th century. century (porch) and in the 13th (choir). The rest of the building was built for the most part in the 15th century, including the three naves. There is also an interior chapel called the Counts of Chabannes, backing onto the choir. A 15th century stained glass window depicting the Crucifixion, a tabernacle and a statue of the Angel of the Annunciation, inside the church, are also listed.
In the hamlet of Chabannes, finally, in addition to the wells, the granite tank and the wash house which are supplied by a source at the edge of the neighboring forest, it should be noted that the old castle was chosen by a relief organization (OSE) during World War II to welcome and protect more than 400 Jewish children of all nationalities. Commemorative plaques affixed to the walls of the schools recall this noble page of local history. In addition, a stele in this same hamlet pays tribute to the resistance fighters who had joined the maquis of the Montautre camp, in the nearby woods.
On the cultural side, the library of the new town of Fursac regularly offers activities (meetings, readings): inquire at +33 5 55 63 31 20.
For walks or hikes, in addition to the Tancognaguet Park in Saint-Pierre, vast 7 hectares and particularly rich in its giant sequoias, no less than six routes have been designed and marked in the town (three in the north, three in the south). They allow to appreciate the green character of the landscape, and its ecological richness, like the valley of Gartempe which is now protected. Mountain biking enthusiasts are not forgotten: three circuits 10 to 26 km long have been marked out in order to appreciate the village, its surroundings, the hamlets and of course the countryside and wooded areas...
