Charny Orée de Puisaye is a village of Yonne, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, 40 km north-west of Auxerre, on the borders of Loiret.
The town was created on 1 January 2016 following the merger of all the villages that belonged to the community of Orée de la Puisaye. Charny was the largest of them with 1600 inhabitants. The other communes were Chambeugle, Chêne-Arnoult, Chevillon, Dicy, Fontenouilles, Grandchamp, Malicorne, Marchais-Beton, Perreux, Prunoy, Saint-Denis-sur-Ouanne, Saint-Martin-sur-Ouanne and Villefranche.
With more than 5,000 inhabitants, Charny Orée de Puisaye has a very large territory (230 km²), in the Puisaye natural region, bordering Orléanais, Nivernais and Burgundy. Its landscape is characterized by wet plateaus dotted with numerous forests and ponds.
Most of the economic activity is still agricultural and artisanal.
The historic and environmental heritage of the new municipality, where many recreational facilities are located, will delight lovers of green and cultural tourism.
In terms of historical built heritage, most of the old townships have retained a typical traditional charm, with halls, half-timbered dwellings and picturesque elements such as fountains or mills.
Several classified monuments deserve a specific detour.
This is the case of the castle of Chevillon, on the eponymous town, restored in the seventeenth century on the basis of a fortified building of the fifteenth century where according to legend, Joan of Arc spent a night in 1429. This imposing castle is surrounded a park of 10 hectares and moats as many defensive elements have been preserved. Now more residential, it houses a hotel. A dovecote, a drawbridge are also visible. Information on +33 6 40 42 61 25.
At Grandchamp, the castle dates from 1610. Private property, it still has a dovecote, moats and a singular alley in water.
In Perreux, the castle of Montigny was erected in the early seventeenth century by the local lord. His plan evokes a horseshoe decorated with circular towers. Behind the stables of the castle, a pottery was active from 1735 to 1812. Visit by appointment from early July to mid-September. Contact the +33 6 09 91 49 39.
In Prunoy, finally, the castle dates from the sixteenth century but has been remodeled, surrounded by a vast park of 100 hectares. Transformed into hotel, the site is not open all year. Information on +33 3 86 63 66 91.
In terms of religious heritage, two churches deserve special attention: the church of St. Martin-sur-Ouanne, the sixteenth century, and the Church of St. Sebastian de Dicy, built on a hillside. The nave dates from the twelfth century, but it has been remodeled several times, like the other parts of the church. We will linger at the choir, which rises to 13 m, and gives its originality to this church, which is also typical of the region and has been the subject of a recent restoration campaign.
On the 220 hectares of the town, dotted with woods, ponds, wetlands protected for their fauna and flora, multiple hiking trails or mountain biking are available to enthusiasts. Brochures and information on +33 3 86 74 10 07.
We can prefer horseback riding to explore these charming landscapes. Then contact the equestrian domain of Chevillon at +33 3 86 73 50 20.
However, the most original way to combine tourism and new sensations is to take the Vélorail Puisaye, built on an old railway. Do not be afraid to pedal, with family or friends, but it combines sport and discovery of nature still intact. Picnic areas are located along the route (loop 32 km round trip). Price: from 8 euros. Departure from Charny. Information on +33 6 32 45 63 91.
As for sports and leisure activities, the Charny outdoor swimming pool is open every day in July and August except Mondays. Information on +33 3 86 63 71 34.
You can also join the outings of the local cyclo-tourism club (call +33 3 86 91 86 17), play a game of petanque (contact +33 3 86 91 87 19) or reserve a tennis court at +33 6 03 70 32 29.

- Musical adaptation by Raphaël Callandreau. Molière turned it into a comedy-ballet. Now he's turned it into a wild musical. Molière's best-known satire and his prose intertwined with swinging songs, in keeping with the vocabulary and idioms of the period, in the light of our contemporary issues. Two actors and two actresses, all excellent singers, share all the roles. A sick, dusted off show that is as popular as it is timeless.
