The Saint-Thomas-des-Indiens chapel is located at Saint-Denis, on Reunion Island.
It was built in 1862 after the founding of the Mission of Saint-Thomas des Indiens in 1852 by the work of the propagation of the Faith (Jesuit order), at the request of the first bishop of Réunion, Mgr Deprez. The objective was to evangelize the Indian immigrants: certain censuses then estimate their number at 38,000 on the island, who came in particular to work in the sugar estates when slavery was not abolished until 1848.
The chapel is characteristic of the modest architecture of the time, notably with lime plaster of different colors.
Although protected as historical monuments (with the surrounding garden), the building is in poor condition and must be subject to restoration.
It can be observed during a free or guided walk in the city.
