Sèvremoine

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Maine-et-Loire

Sèvremoine is a community of Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire region, about ten kilometers northwest of Cholet.

The town was created in December 2015 following the merger of Saint-Macaire-en-Mauges (7203 inhabitants), Le Longeron (2143 inhabitants), Montfaucon-Montigné (2123 inhabitants), La Renaudière (989 inhabitants), Roussay (1223 inhabitants), Saint-André-de-la-Marche (2874 inhabitants), Saint-Crespin-sur-Moine (1588 inhabitants), Saint-Germain-sur-Moine (2928 inhabitants), Tillières (1769 inhabitants) and Torfou (2130 inhabitants) inhabitants), or more than 26,000 inhabitants.

On the borders of the Vendée and Loire-Atlantique, the vast territory of the new commune (213 km²) belongs to the natural and historical region of Mauges, which presents a landscape of grove rich in rivers and agriculture focused on breeding but also viticulture.

Small industries (quarries, leatherworking) have notably marked the history of the ancient localities of Sèvremoine.

Tested by the Vendée uprisings and the repressions that followed in 1793 after having been dominated by powerful seigniories, the old commune preserved a historical and natural heritage of quality. A step is required for lovers of green and cultural tourism.

Things to see and do

In terms of historical heritage, over the various former municipalities now forming Sèvremoine, we can linger at Saint-Macaire at the Chapel of la Bernardière (fifteenth and eighteenth centuries), the chapel Sainte-Marguerite or the menhir of the Grande Pierre Levée, testimony of the human presence on the region since the Neolithic period.

At the Longeron, the Notre-Dame church dates from the 19th century and deserves a stopover, and on Montfaucon-Montigné, the remarkable Saint-Jean chapel (12th and 15th century) and the Moulins des Grands jardins were inscribed. To see also on these old villages, the church Saint-Jacques with Montfaucon (XIIe, remodeled with the XVIIIe century) and several chapels and wash-houses.

On La Renaudière, several menhirs have been discovered and in Roussay, the Saint-Pierre church of the 19th century justifies a stage.

In Saint-André-de-la-Marche, a replica of the Grotto of Lourdes deserves a stop, and in Saint-Germain-sur-Moine, in addition to the megalithic stones of Davière and Borrères, the remains of the old castle the Jarrie and especially the castle of Perrinière, rebuilt in 1660 in a more residential style on the bases of a medieval wall, are worthy of interest. Like the chapel Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours restored in 1860 in a neo-Gothic style based on the seventeenth century.

In Tillières, finally, we will dwell at the level of the neo-Gothic church, and the various mills testifying to the past activity, while in Torfou, the castle of Couboureau, rebuilt in the 19th century, the Column erected in 1836 to witness the violent battle that took place during the wars of Vendée and the megalithic site of Pierre Tournisse are worth a look.

Note that in most churches and chapels of Sèvremoine, a document available at the entrance allows visitors to discover the history and remarkable elements of buildings...
