Common Ile de Ré, in the department of Charente-Maritime, Saint-Clément-des-Baleines is located on the west of the island, between the Wild Coast and the large beach of Conche, bordering forest. Composed of six hamlets, it is dominated by the famous Lighthouse Whale.
The one that owes its name to the numerous strandings of cetaceans until the beginning of the 20th century is known since antiquity thanks to the pen of Pliny the Elder. The commune of Saint-Clément-des-Baleine strictly speaking is however officially created in 1874, by detachment of the commune of Ars-en-Ré.
Very popular with tourists for its unspoiled setting, the village also has an interesting architectural heritage to discover while staying on one of the favorite French islands.
