The Cantegrel dolmen, also called "dolmen des Clotes" or "Roc del Cayre", is located in the town of Saint-Chamassy, in the Dordogne, about ten kilometers south of Bugue.
It was brought to light and studied at the end of the 19th century, and some excavations were then undertaken in the surroundings without revealing other archaeological treasures.
Listed in the Inventory since 2008, located in a rural environment, the dolmen is made up of orthostats (stones) in red sandstone and dates from the Neolithic (between 5800 and 2500 years before our era).
The whole forms a burial chamber whose entrance is 1.20 m wide and 2.30 m long. The supports of the five orthostats (including the oval table up to 3.50 m long) are only slightly sunk into the ground and the monument may have been partly moved during the construction of a railway line in the 19th century.
The fact remains that this testimony of a very ancient human presence on the site remains of interest, the entire region being renowned for its caves and habitats, some dating from several thousand years before our era..
This dolmen can mark out a walk in the charming village of Saint-Chamassy and its surroundings, between the courses of the Vézère to the north and the Dordogne to the south. Information on +33 5 53 07 24 03.
