Saint-Caprais-de-Blaye is a rural community of about 550 inhabitants spread over 517 hectares.
With its 150 hectares of vineyards on the hillside appellation Blaye - Cotes de Bordeaux, the town is becoming increasingly attractive due to its facilities but also to his situation.
Located 20 km from Blaye and 60 km from Bordeaux, south, and less than an hour drive from the beaches of Royan, in the north is a friendly village that combines tradition and modernity and where to live. Saint-Caprais enjoys excellent accessibility, thanks to the proximity of the Provincial Road 137 and Junction 38 of the A10 motorway.
Saint-Caprais-de-Blaye is one of the first villages along the Gironde by pilgrims who take the "Tours Path" to Saint Jacques de Compostela.
A Romanesque parish church was followed by a neo-Gothic church built in 1868 by architect John Edward Bonnore. The new church is composed mainly of a barrel-vaulted nave, finished with a closer apse, vaulted cul-de-four and decorated with murals.
The bell tower is topped with two floors of a polygonal arrow. The bell tower houses two bells, the oldest has the inscription "IHS MA SVIS ESTE deed FOR SAINT CAPPRAYS Vitrezay OF 1597".
The church is dedicated to St. Clair, first bishop of Nantes (1), famous for his virtues and miracles. He was especially reputed to cure blindness. The altar is decorated with a beautiful bas relief showing St. Clair surrounded by thirteen characters including three children.
One can distinguish the imposition of two fingers of the left hand of Saint Clair (second from left) on the eye of an adult. The fineness of the sculpture can be appreciated.
Saint Clair is also represented by a window and a statue.
(1) Not to be confused with St. Clair would be from Africa evangelize Aquitaine. First Bishop of Albi, he was martyred in Lectoure in Gascony in the fourth century.
Mission Cross: Located on the edge of the road, a mission cross is a monument designed to recall a collective act of piety which could take various forms.
The mission of cross Saint-Caprais-de-Blaye located on the church square, along the main road through the village, includes two dates in 1869 and 1894.
