Saint-André-les-Vergers

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Aube

Saint-André-les-Vergers is a city of the Aube, in Greater East, southwest of Troyes of which it is bordering.

The locality developed from the seventh century after the founding of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Pierre de Montier-la-Celle which proved to be from the twelfth century as one of the most important abbeys of Champagne. It was nevertheless to be closed in 1770 before being demolished during the Revolution.

The monks who cultivated the surrounding wetlands, the church of Saint-Étienne erected in the 16th century has a portal decorated with garlands of fruits and vegetables, proving that gardening and arboriculture are already the reputation of the village.

The crops were then sold at Troyes, protected by fortifications. But recent excavations have revealed the underground: the inhabitants of Saint-André and the monks could find refuge in case of peril.

It was then to wait for the 20th century with the establishment of factories of hosiery and then of metallurgy so that the village becomes a city, its population going from 4 500 to the Liberation to almost 12 000 today.

Saint-André-les-Vergers has nevertheless preserved a pleasant living environment and equipped itself with cultural facilities. It is an interesting stopover for visiting Troyes and Champagne.

Things to see and do

While many typical timber-framed houses dot the historic heart of the city, the Saint-André church is the jewel of its historical heritage. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1840, it was erected at the beginning of the 16th century. On the outside, one notices the perpendicular roofs of the lateral vessels which, with those of the nave and the aisles, have the effect of a spectacular and dynamic elevation.

It is also necessary to linger at the portal façade, adorned with garlanded columns, mascarons and a set of sculptured details that reveal an astonishing mannerism.

The interior is also worth a look with a 12th century hunt, 16th century sculptures, a pieta and a polychrome and gilded limestone altarpiece, also from the 16th century. An association offers guided tours all year round, by appointment. Contact the.

The other part of the heritage is natural.

In the valley of the Fontaine Saint-Martin, the wood of the same name also forms a kind of green castle that allows to reach Troyes, the valley being rich otherwise in orchards...
