The Ursuline convent Rouen was located in the Cross area of Pierre, on the "is" of the city.
The nuns of the order founded in 1535 and whose aim was to focus on teaching and education of poor girls wanted to settle from 1617 Rouen.
But at first, the aldermen considering the number of communities already fairly high, they must be sheltered to teach more than 400 students in buildings made available by the notables.
After intervention of the bishop, the convent finally starts and is completed in 1653. In 1730, a church in majestic style, whose façade has an impressive portal is completed to turn a small high Baroque chapel in the garden filling the whole.
In the meantime, in 1727, the nuns of the order have established a subsidiary in America, in New Orleans.
Driven to the Revolution, the Ursulines resume their activities under the First Empire and must again leave the law on the congregations in 1893.
The monastery with its annexes was bought by the city in 1906. The convent building was then converted into workers' housing and the church houses a library.
In the 1970s, the piercing of the Avenue de la Porte des Champs and the construction of the Regional Conservatory of Music entail the demolition of the old buildings of the monastery.
Only the church into a library is saved, and the Baroque chapel overlooking rue des Capuchins and whose decoration from 1746 has been preserved.
It is for this reason that the site is protected as historical monuments.
