Ville de Haute-Saône, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, Ronchamp takes place some forty kilometers from Vesoul, in the heart of the Vosges Saônoises. Close to Belfort or Montbéliard, the old mining town benefits from varied and preserved natural landscapes.
Populated as early as the 4th century BC by a Gallic tribe, the territory of Ronchamp developed as a town at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Attached to the baillage of Amont in the 14th century on the decision of Philippe VI of France, it became property of the Habsburgs of Spain and the Germanic Empire at the end of the 15th century. Redevened French in 1678, the city then developed a major mining activity. The last wells, however, close one after the other in the middle of the 20th century.
Today mainly tourism, the commune of Ronchamp still benefits from the aura of constructions made by Le Corbusier in the course of the twentieth century.
Built on the plans of Le Corbusier, the Notre-Dame-du-Haut chapel was consecrated in 1955. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and listed as a 20th-century heritage site and takes its place on an ancient sanctuary Roman and an old chapel. Located at the top of the Bourlémont hill, it is mainly composed of reinforced concrete. Constructed of salvaged stones, it reveals an all round architecture, inspired by the carapace of the crab for its roof. Very bright, it reveals in particular a series of truncated pyramids on the south wall which brings a beautiful light to the different stained glass. The ensemble is inspired by the Sidi Brahim mosque of El Atteuf in Algeria. In 2011, the architect Renzo Piano added a convent to the building, to house the clan sisters of Besançon. The latter was rewarded with the special prize of the jury L'Equerre d'argent the following year. The chapel is connected to the center of Ronchamp by a Way of the Cross with fourteen stations since the end of the 19th century.
Built in the second half of the 19th century, Notre-Dame-du-Bas church is characterized by its interesting neo-Gothic style. Inside, one can admire a furniture of the XIXe century. The town also has a beautiful 16th century Calvary.
Several mining wells are still visible in the commune of Ronchamp, like those of Saint-Charles, Saint-Joseph, Sainte-Marie or Etançon. The latter is part of the historical mining circuit of the outcrops of the Etançon.
Various monuments and other fixed decorations pay tribute to mining in Ronchamp, such as the cube of the Prêles, one of the bas-reliefs of Notre-Dame-du-Bas church, or the memorial of the mine which represents the wells of the mining basin.
Napoleon III style manor, the castle of the Houillère dates from the middle of the XIXe century. After serving as official accommodation for the directors of the coal mines of Ronchamp, it now offers guest rooms.
The town is part of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges and offers several hiking trails, as well as the hill of Bourlémont.
The market takes place every Saturday morning. The city also offers a Christmas market in December.
The Musique aux 4 Horizons festival takes place near the Notre-Dame-du-Haut chapel and features concerts by young European talents.
Every first Sunday in October, the city organizes the fair Ronchamp a la Patate to pay tribute to the potato. It proposes tastings, animations, as well as the presence of the brotherhood of the potato.
