The old medieval town is built on the rock of St Symphorien and protected by the fortresses of Dieuze and St Offange (volcanic vents). The ruins of the castle of Saint Offange are still visible. Rochefort is also famous for its sweet white wines. Three designations are to be tasted: Coteaux du Layon and Quarts de Chaume Chaume. In 1941, the city of poets called "The School of Rochefort" was founded by Jean Bouhier, joined by René-Guy Cadou and over 100 other poets. Every year, events recognized can discover these poets and new talent.
