Castle Rochefort-en-Valdaine is located on the town of the same name, in the Drome, 15 km southeast of Montelimar. Chief town of a castellany, it is primarily a mound castrale and, in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the walls are fortified and includes a dwelling, a keep and a chapel dedicated to Saint Blaise. At the foot of this new stone castle, the village develops.
The wall is remodeled in the fourteenth century before the site is somewhat abandoned. In the sixteenth century, the castle is again occupied and is subject to modernization. Its ruins are recovered and restored during the second half of the 20th century thanks to an association of passionate volunteers.
Example of defensive castral architecture, the site is classified in 2001.
Property of the town, exhibitions are presented in summer and a center welcomes researchers.
Its visit at the end of a pleasant hike provides a remarkable point of view from the dungeon.
