The largest clerical building in Auvergne after the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption cathedral in Clermont-Ferrand, the Saint-Amable basilica of Riom was originally a simple church erected in the 5th century by Amable. Proclaimed blessed on his death, he was subsequently the source of several miracles which made the building a high place of pilgrimage.
The building retains traces of all its successive changes over the centuries, in particular with a nave reminiscent of Romanesque architecture or the charm of Volvic stone and the breaking of its large arcades.
Visitors will also discover an ambulatory choir or even radiating 13th century Gothic-style chapels. Impossible to miss the late 14th century funeral chapels in Flamboyant Gothic style or the elegant mid-19th century bell tower.
