Hotel du Molant, sometimes also referred to as the Hévin Hotel, is a town house located in the historic city center of Rennes in Brittany.
The building is precisely located at the intersection of rue de Juillet and Place des Lices, where every Saturday a famous market of local food products and flowers is held according to a tradition born at the beginning of the 17th century.
The hotel du Molant was built a little later, from 1666 to 1670 on behalf of a rich jurist, Pierre Hévin. Headquarters of the Intendance of Brittany from 1689 to 1692, the building is composed of two corner buildings forming an arcaded inner courtyard that housed the stables.
Architecturally classic, the mansion house has many skylights with pediment on a cornice modillions topped with a slate roof announcing blankets called "Mansart". A door is adorned with a trumeau carved wood depicting the bust of Louis XIV and medallions to the glory of the King.
The building also houses a large baluster stairwell with a trompe l'oeil painted ceiling. Note however that the woodwork and painted ceilings of the ground floor were dismantled and sent to the United States in 1924, except for a ceiling representing "Urania and the Comets". Most of the carved and painted decoration was the work of Parisian workshops.
Hotel du Molant has been protected as a historical monument since 1963. It now houses a well-known restaurant on the ground floor which, in the summer months, serves the courtyard and the terrace, from which you can enjoy a view of the cathedral or on the market, Saturday...
The rest of the building is not accessible to the public.
Failing to frequent the establishment, the mansion can mark a pleasant walk in the form of discovery of the historic heart of the capital of Brittany. Information on +33 8 91 67 35 35.
