The Charles-Friry museum is located at Remiremont, in the Vosges department.
Created in 1970, the establishment is housed in a former 18th century residence that once belonged to the town's chapter. It was the home of Charles Friry, magistrate and very enlightened art lover. The site includes a park with two baroque fountains and a century-old arbor.
The collection of the establishment contains several major works including a painting by Georges de La Tour painted in 1640, "The old man with a satchel", bought by Charles Friry in 1846. Only a few dozen paintings by Georges de La Tour are listed worldwide.
Also on display are the portrait of the Mauresse by Moret and engravings by Rembrandt, Callot and Goya.
The museum was refurbished in 2020 to showcase paintings from the 1920s to 1950s, the reconstructed studio of the artist Pierre Waidmann, but also obviously the masterpiece of Georges de La Tour. Rooms are also dedicated to pewter, old paintings and another reconstructs a room of the Remiremont hospital in the 18th century with its pharmacy listed as historical monuments, including a set of earthenware bearing the arms of the Duke of Lorraine Stanislas.
The ensemble has retained the atmosphere of the interiors of yesteryear as arranged at the time by art collectors.
