Former royal, imperial and presidential residence, the castle of Rambouillet takes place in the Yvelines, in a park of nearly 1000 hectares nestled in the heart of the forest of Rambouillet. Long used as a Mecca of French diplomacy, the building today classified as a Historic Monument has hosted over the centuries the greatest figures in world history, becoming the scene of many events as important as the death of François I, the abdication of Charles X or the literary courts of Les Précieuses so well mocked by Molière.
Originally a 14th century fortified castle, it has undergone many transformations over the centuries before becoming the magnificent pleasure residence acquired by Louis XVI in 1783 that we now know. Formerly a popular hunting area for its game, the building still hosts Heads of State invited by the French government.
Accessible to visitors, the castle of Rambouillet seduces its visitors with the beauty of its interior decorations, with the marble room, the oak paneling of the 18th century or the very beautiful neo-Pompeian style decorations of the 1st Empire.
But the castle of Rambouillet is also a park and a French garden that leaves no stone unturned. Visitors can thus stroll in peace between canals and water features, particularly appreciating the charm of the shell cottage. Made by the Duke of Penthièvre at the end of the 18th century for the famous Duchess of Lamballe, it is entirely made up of shells and mother-of-pearl decorations. Not far from there, it is possible to discover the queen's dairy built for Marie-Antoinette and which was then used as a tasting place.
