Puget-sur-Argens is a town in the Var in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, bordering Fréjus, and 70 km north-east of Toulon.

Attached to the kingdom of France in 1482, the village was fortified during the wars of religion in the sixteenth century and became a true commune in 1599 when the bishop of Frejus abandons his feudal rights on the territory.

Situated between the Esterel Massif and the Argens plain, the area developed during the second half of the 20th century: areas of activity were developed, crossed by the RN7 and then by the motorway, Puget-sur-Argens Population from 1,500 inhabitants to the Liberation to more than 7,000 today.

However, the city has managed to preserve its environmental heritage: the Malvoisin woods and especially the banks of the Argens (and the ponds that dotted them) are part of the Natura 2000 network (remarkable fauna and flora deserving protection).

Several wine-producing estates are still active (appellation Côtes de Provence), and the production of olive oil as sheep farming is still perennial.

Close to the Mediterranean coast, the beaches are less than 10 km, Puget-sur-Argens could thus become a stage or even a vacation resort appreciated by tourists.

Things to see and do

A walk in the city center is the opportunity to discover an interesting historical heritage: it is the case of the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, for example, dating from the XVIth, Gothic style. It houses several listed elements: its bell (XVIII), altarpieces (17th century), statues of the Virgin but also an ancient Roman marker which now serves as a base for baptismal font.

Inside the present library, you can also discover an old banal oven from the 13th century, while in Callas street you can still distinguish the vestibules by which the villagers brought the wine into the cellars! Nearby, one will appreciate a walk Curie street, picturesque and flowery.

The clock tower and its eighteenth-century bell tower, erected on the ancient fortifications of the city and the mills' quarry (where the Romans used the Esterel rock for their mills) are also worth a detour.

More generally, many walks can be envisaged on or from the territory of Puget-sur-Argens, along the river, flirting with the massif of Esterel and its glowing rocks or even crossing the forests of pines and oaks.
