Prudhomat is a village in northern Lot in Occitania, on the border of Corrèze and Cantal, 80 km northeast of Cahors and less than 10 km from Saint-Céré.
This village consists of four hamlets that were formed and developed around the fortified medieval castle of Castelnau-Bretenoux, bordering the river Dordogne into which the Cere, the Bave and the Mamoul (on or in the immediate vicinity of the communal territory) throw themselves. Its history is linked to that of the lineage Castelnau which built the fortress from the twelfth century.
The name of the village was born of the creation, after the Revolution, of a magisterial council composed of two nobles and four laborers who were in charge of local affairs.
Always linked to its castle which is now a major tourist attraction of the region, the activity of Prudhomat (about 740 inhabitants) also comes from agriculture and handicrafts.
