Pierrefitte-sur-Seine

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Seine-Saint-Denis

Pierrefitte-sur-Seine is a city of Seine-Saint-Denis in the Île-de-France region, bordering the Val-d'Oise, 10 kilometers north of Paris.

A small seigneury belonging to the abbey of Saint-Denis since the ninth century, Pierrefitte-sur-Seine was until the middle of the 19th century a village alive of agriculture and the exploitation of gypsum and plaster.

After the arrival of the railway in 1856, the city was originally a holiday resort for the inhabitants of the capital, then its industry developed (draperies, railway material), but it retains a real market gardening and horticultural activity.

Its urbanization intensifies during the 20th century in the form of housing estates and then large estates. Pierrefitte-sur-Seine now has just under 30,000 inhabitants.

In its territory, however, many green spaces have been preserved, and at the beginning of the 21st century, the site of the National Archives dedicated to the preservation of post-Revolutionary documents has been established there.

The painter Maurice Utrillo who spent his childhood in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine immortalized the city in several paintings. A cultural space dedicated to him preserves and presents many of his works. One more reason to visit the city during a stay in the Paris region.

Things to see and do

In terms of heritage, a discovery of the city may include the Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais church, dating from the mid-19th century, whose twelfth-century baptismal font comes from an older building. Its bell tower, which is right and wide, houses a bell donated by the Empress Eugenie in 1859.

The Sainte-Thérèse des Joncherolles church and the Notre-Dame-de-la-Reconnaissance chapel date back to the 1960s and the demographic growth of the city.

In terms of civil architecture, the town hall built in 1949 was extensively redesigned and expanded during the interwar period and then in 2009.

But it is especially the new National Archives Center that is worth a visit. Its construction was decided in 2004 on the Tertres area, close to communication links with the University of Paris VIII in Saint-Denis and the University of Paris XIII in Villetaneuse. The Center symbolizes the will of the public authorities to equip this territory at the gates of the capital with an equipment symbolizing its mutation. Inaugurated at the beginning of 2013, the 42 m high building with contemporary lines was designed by the architect Massimiliano Fuksas, and stores 320 linear kilometers. It can accommodate 400 people (researchers, teachers, students). It is dedicated to the archives after 1790. Exhibition room and consultation rooms open from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 4:45 pm. Free discovery visit of the site every Monday at 14h. Information on +33 1 75 47 20 02.

This is the case of the Parc de la Republique (lawns, playgrounds), the Frédérick-Lemaître park (7,000 m², including a pond of 800 m² and a pretty building dating from the 19th century which houses the Music and Dance Conservatory), The Nelson-Mandela Park (trees and lawns), and finally the Butte-Pinson Regional Park, north of the city. Covering an area of 12 hectares, which also includes part of the territories of the communes of Villetaneuse and Montmagny), it offers varied greenery landscapes where waterfalls and ponds come together with trees and shrubs. It is the green lung of the city...
