Enjoying a peaceful setting in the lovely Sumène Valley, Saignes is a charming medieval village in Cantal, 10 kilometres south of Bort-les-Orgues. A listed Green Resort, this agreeable locality at the foot of two ancient volcanoes has some nice old houses, especially on the side of the picturesque Place de l'Église.
Typical of Auvergne Romanesque art, Saignes Church, dedicated to the Holy Cross (Sainte-Croix) is worth a visit, with its modillions and carved capitals.
A relic of Saignes' old fortress, the Romanesque Chapel of Our Lady of the Castle (Notre-Dame-du-Château), built in the 12th century at the top of a rocky peak, still watches over the village. From its terrace overlooking the surrounding area, there is a lovely view of the Sumène Valley and the Orgues de Bort columns!
