As the administrative centre of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département, a stopping place on the Napoleon Road (Route Napoléon), a spa and health resort and the lavender capital, the town of Digne-les-Bains has plenty to interest visitors! The historic centre, dominated by Saint-Jérôme cathedral, features picturesque pedestrian streets and Saint-Charles hill. It is also home to the must-see Gassendi museum devoted to local history, art and science. Housed in a 16th-century former hospice, it contains collections of 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century painting, as well as contemporary artworks, stuffed animals and physics and optical instruments.

Specialising in the treatment of respiratory and rheumatic problems, the Thermes de Digne-les-Bains thermal baths north of the town offer spa cures as well as fitness breaks and well-being treatments. The new water fun park, set in the heart of the thermal bathing establishment's extension, includes an indoor pool connected to an outdoor pool, along with a spa. Definitely one for relaxation fans!

Digne-les-Bains also organises the Corso de la Lavande every August, a five-day lavender festival featuring parades of flower-covered floats, a producers' market, shows, concerts, dances and fireworks.

Things to see and do

Digne-les-Bains has the distinction of having two cathedrals (Saint-Jérôme and Notre Dame du Bourg). The archaeological crypt Notre Dame du Bourg reveals the origins of the city, from the first century.

The Gassendi Museum presents encyclopedic collections in the field of art, local history and natural sciences. The peculiarity of Digne consists of jewelry fashioned from pentagram-shaped fossils "the Stars of St. Vincent."

Headquarters of UNESCO Geopark Haute-Provence, the Promenade-Museum is located in a large park shaded north of the city, overlooking the river Bléone. Nearby, the slab with ammonites is a unique place, not to be missed. It has 320 m² over 1550 ammonites. These ammonites are large: the biggest are 70 cm in diameter!

Alexandra David-Neel was the first European woman to enter the forbidden city of Lhasa, Tibet, in 1924. Visit the writer house of this woman in the singular course!
