The small character town of Asnières-sur-Vègre is one of the most beautiful villages in Sarthe! Take a walk and discover its medieval atmosphere and built heritage full of picturesque charm: the Romanesque Old Bridge over the peaceful waters of the Vègre; the Courthouse, also known as the Temple, built in the 13th century; and the surrounding area with a charming rose garden, old houses from the 15th to the 17th century and more.

The village is also famous for its small Church of St. Hilary, which contains remarkable listed wall paintings inside. Produced at the request of the canons of Le Mans between the 12th and 16th centuries, these superb frescoes illustrate the Adoration of the Magi, the Presentation at the Temple, the Flight to Egypt, and scenes from Hell...

The shady banks of Asnières, an ideal spot for a moment's reverie, as well as the pretty view from the Old Bridge over the Vègre, further add to the appeal of the place.

Art-lovers should not miss Asnières on Canvas (Asnières sur Toiles), an exhibition of artists with a painting contest in the street, in the first weekend of June!

Asnières-sur-Vègre

Asnières-sur-Vègre is a small village in the Pays de la Loire which takes place in the heart of the Sarthe department. Located not far from La Flèche, it is an integral part of the canton of Sablé-sur-Sarthe.

This charming town, formerly known as the most beautiful village in Maine, has been labeled Small Town of Character a few years ago. Born during the Middle Ages, it has gradually turned towards tourism through a heritage of great interest, and cultural events rich in entertainment.

In peace, you will enjoy all the charms of this village crossed by the Vègre. The beauty of its houses and the richness of its natural heritage make it an idyllic place to spend holidays with family or friends.

Things to see and do

Becomed a property of the canons of Asnières in the 11th century, the church of Saint-Hilaire was at that time covered with murals in the nave. These were updated in the 1950s and restored. One can thus discover on one of the walls of the nave, the promise of the Redemption.

The commune of Asnières-sur-Vègre also has an ancient court of justice, also called the Temple, and built between the thirteenth and fourteenth century. Former ecclesiastical seat of Asnières in the Middle Ages, the building also served as a gentleman's house in the 15th century, from the 18th century to the 18th century, before being divided into apartments in the course of the 19th century. The building is now classified as a Historic Monument.

Rebuilt in the XIXth century, the old stone bridge of Asnières-sur-Vègre offers a magnificent view of the Vègre. In Romanesque style, it is located not far from the old fountain Saint-Aldric transformed into laundry.

Several castles and other mansions are also present on the territory of the village, such as the castle of Moulinvieux, the mansion of the court, the manor of the Tannery, or the manor of Claies. All the most beautiful monuments of Asnières-sur-Vègre can be admired and appreciated via a marked trail that crosses part of the Sarthe commune.

Discover the manor house of the court, recently rehabilitated and open to visitors. It is now a cultural and tourist place in the heart of the village of Asnières-sur-Vègre. It offers the public a permanent exhibition on the rich history of this building and daily life in the Middle Ages. A digital and very playful exhibition, perfect for a family outing, awaits you...

The mosaic garden is an eco-friendly garden that spans almost 2.5 hectares. You will be able to admire, during the time of a walk, a hundred species of perennial flowers, ancient roses or some medicinal plants.

A conservatory orchard also takes place at Asnières-sur-Vègre. Created in 1996, its ambition is to preserve endangered species of fruit.
