Located south of the Landes, about twenty kilometers from Dax and thirty kilometers of Bayonne, the small town of Peyrehorade is in the heart of the country of Landes Adour, between the Landes de Gascogne, the Basque Country and the Béarn.

City Peyrehorade, which gave its name to the characters of the Venus d'Ille of Merimee, was created in 1448 under the orders of Charles VII, King of France.

Famous for its historical heritage, many sites can be visited to learn more about the history of the city and its surroundings.

Charming, Peyrehorade enjoys the sweet life of the villages of the southwest, as well as an important tourist area.

Things to see and do

Old, City Peyrehorade hosts within it many attractions witness to a rich history.

Most important tourist place Peyrehorade, the castle of Montreal was built in the sixteenth century. This former residence of the viscounts of Orthe the country served as a military hospital then and now houses City Hall. One can enjoy there nice round towers at each corner.

Built between the eleventh and twelfth, Castle Aspremont was originally a tower installed on a divot. The building became the residence of the viscounts of Orthe between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Today you can still see a ruined mistress tower dating from the thirteenth century, and another mound.

The Church of St. Martin of Peyrehorade is also an absolute must.

City Peyrehorade has the distinction of hosting no fewer than three Jewish cemeteries.

Many walking and cycling trails also pass through the town in order to enjoy all the tourist and natural sites.

Events and festivities

Close to its traditions, the small town of Peyrehorade offers for centuries dynamic and festive entertainment.

Peyrehorade The market is held every Wednesday morning since 1358. In summer, the city also offers craft Gascon market with discoveries of ancient trades, carriage rides, tastings or old games.

In July, the international festival of choral singing of the Pays d'Orthe offers several concerts of international choirs Peyrehorade.

In early August, room for celebrations and fairs of the city with entertainment several days.
