Belvès Castle is located in the new commune of Pays de Belvès, in the Dordogne, 16 km northeast of Monpazier.
Formerly called Hôtel de Commarque, in reference to an ancient and powerful noble family of Périgord, the building is located along the main street of the old town.
It is a 14th and 16th century noble residence which was extended in the 19th century.
Equipped with a stair tower, the large medieval house included on the ground floor "shops" accessible from the street, which are still materialized by four pointed arches. Located at the entrance to the city and facing the possessions of the Preachers Brothers, it has neat exteriors and richly carved mullioned windows.
Latrines were also built.
In the 19th century, a tower was added and rooms raised to create a link with the medieval building.
It was from this time that the hotel was commonly referred to as a "castle".
Acquired in 2008 when it was already protected as a historic monument, the site then underwent restoration work which brought to light two 15th century wall frescoes. This real treasure, where you can already see the influence of the Renaissance, is carefully highlighted as part of a scientific programme. Are represented on the one hand a character against a background of wooded landscape and on the other hand the triads of the Nine Preux (three series of three knights considered as the most courageous in history: Hector, Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar for the " Antiques", Joshua, David and Judas Maccabee for the Jews and finally, for the Christians, Arthur, Charlemagne and Godfrey of Bouillon).
