Church Sainte-Odile

Monument in Paris

The Sainte-Odile church is located Avenue Mallarmé, near the Porte de Champerret, in the 17th arrondissement of the capital.

Its construction began in 1935 and was completed in 1946. This project was part of a series of projects initiated by the Archbishop of Verdun, who wanted to "promote the construction and maintenance of churches on Paris". and its region, especially at the level of the periphery of the city where a poor and uprooted population had often been established ".

The association created for this purpose, "the work of Chantiers du Cardinal" did not however have to finance the church Sainte-Odile. The necessary funds were raised among the parishioners, including Bishop Loutil, known as a journalist at La Croix and novelist under the pseudonym Pierre l'Ermite. His mother being from Alsace, he obtained that the church be dedicated to Saint Odile.

The building was designed by architect Jacques Barge. Neo-Byzantine style, evoking Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, it is covered by three domes each with 24 windows. As for the nave, it is illuminated on one side by large arched windows adorned with beautiful stained glass windows by François Décorchemont, who has for the first time implemented a technique combining molded glass and cement, and is home to the other. three chapels overhung with half-cupolas.

We also note the bell tower high of 72 m which evokes the Italian campaniles and turns out to be the highest of the capital.

However, the gem of the church is located at the porch whose carved tympanum depicts Saint Odile introduced to Heaven by the Virgin, blessed by God while Christ presents a crown. The work is signed by Anne-Marie Roux-Colas.

Finally, note that the church was built in reinforced concrete is covered with bricks and sandstone Alsatian.

Listed as a historical monument since 2001, the church is visited daily. Information on +33 1 42 27 18 37.
