The spiritual Mecca of Alsace, the monastery of Sainte-Odile takes place in Ottrott, in the Bas-Rhin. Located at an altitude of 753 meters, it offers an exceptional panorama of the surroundings.
Attested from the first half of the 8th century, the site was initially fitted out in the castle of Hohenbourg bequeathed by Etichon-Adalric, the Duke of Alsace, to his daughter, the future Saint Odile. Very quickly a very popular place of pilgrimage, especially for eye diseases, the Sainte-Odile monastery was subsequently sold as national property under the French Revolution before regaining its monastic function in the 19th century.
The chapels dedicated to Saint Odile, the Cross, the Tears and the Angels are now classified as Historical Monuments, as are the library and the sculptures in the cloister. Visitors will also be able to admire in this holy place the tomb of Saint Odile, as well as that of her parents. The whole is decorated with exceptional mosaics.
