The Château de La Varenne is located in the new commune of Orée d'Anjou, in the department of Maine-et-Loire.
It is precisely located north of the town of La Varenne, on the left bank of the Loire, a few hectometers from the river and in a partly wooded park.
The building was built from 1850 by the La Bourdonnaye family, one of the great "houses" of Brittany, originally from what is now Côtes-d'Armor and which included a number of great clerks of the kingdom then parliamentarians and ministers in the 19th century.
Designed by the architect François Léon Liberge, the vast castle is generally inspired by Italian neo-classicalism but also the English Palladian fashion of the Adam brothers. The central building and its two pavilions with clean lines are framed by two massive polygonal towers slightly set back.
The park is several hectares large.
The whole is protected as historic monuments for its facades but also the interior staircase and the decorations of certain rooms.
The estate was acquired by a developer in 2000 and some 20 apartments were then built (including part in the old outbuilding).
The complex remains private but you can admire this beautiful example of a noble 19th century castle from the outside during a walk between the town and the banks of the Loire.
