Lac Noir is located at Orbey, in the Haut-Rhin, about twenty kilometers northwest of Colmar.
It is a lake of glacial origin in the heart of a granite cove at an altitude of 935 m, under a crest of the Vosges massif. With a surface area of 14 hectares, Lac Noir is downstream from Lac Blanc, which is more extensive, to which it is connected by a stream and pipes built between the two wars to preserve a level of water necessary for the proper functioning of a power plant, now demolished. This had been built on the north shore of the lake.
Bordered by fir trees and rocks, swimming is prohibited despite the beaches formed during the construction of the power station, but it is accessible to fishermen. It will mark out above all a pleasant but demanding hike in the middle of the mountains, within a preserved and green environment rich in viewpoints on the plain of Alsace.
