Capital of Perche, Nogent-le-Rotrou charms the visitor with its rich heritage, and in particular with its medieval castle overlooking the Huisne valley from its rocky mountain spur. The fortress, consisting of an oblong keep, a Renaissance lodge and a surrounding wall flanked by towers, is home to a museum about the history of the castle and Perche. Besides its fortified castle, the city possesses beautiful old houses, which we can be discovered in the Bourg-le-Comte street and the Saint-Laurent street.

A medieval festival called Percheval that honours the Percheron horse takes place there every Ascension weekend.

Situated in the Eure-et-Loir, in the Centre region, Nogent-le-Rotrou is one of the jewels of the natural region of Perche which is also straddling the River Orne, the Loir-et-Cher and the Sarthe. A fifty kilometers of Le Mans, the city of Nogent-le-Rotrou seduced by its architectural heritage, of course, but also its cultural heritage like the famous Percheron horses which are famous worldwide.

Rewarded in the Contest flowery towns and villages, the town also has a natural surroundings of the green, as well as many green spaces that make the charm of the place. Greenery and ancient monuments coexist perfectly to offer to visitors an aesthetic harmony that leaves no marble.

The capital of the Perche today still has an important architectural and historical heritage that seduces all its visitors.

Built in the 1040s, the castle-museum of the Counts of Perche overlooks including the road to Chartres to Le Mans. Today it is one of the oldest still standing towers in the country. 35 meters high, it has undergone modifications over the twelfth, thirteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Via its 155 steps, it is connected to the famous district of Paty where one can still admire mansions dating from the Renaissance. The museum, located in the castle, you can admire a collection of detailed history of the castle, as well as temporary exhibitions and objects recalling the life of the Perche in the nineteenth century.

Located in the heart of downtown, the Hotel Dieu was founded in 1182 and now houses the tomb of Sully, topped with sculptures in a mausoleum slated. Also note the presence of a statue of Paul Deschanel and local poet Rémy Belleau.

Built in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the Saint Laurent Church was once intended to lay people. If the exterior has a sober appearance, its interior offers the viewer a wealth of furniture, like a Entombment fifteenth century. Not far away, the Saint-Hilaire is the oldest of the city, despite some changes during the sixteenth century.

There are still buildings of the former priory Saint-Denis built in the twelfth century. Redeemed by the city, they house including the house of Justice and Nogent-le-Rotrou Law.

Events and festivities

Historically, the city of Nogent-le-Rotrou has great animation, particularly through different cultural events.

Nogent-le-Rotrou hosts two markets (food and manufactured products) on Saturday, on the Place Saint-Pol and the place of 11 August 1944.

Each year, residents and visitors can enjoy Percheval, a great festival highlighting the Percheron horse. The program includes performances and events on the theme of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a local farmers market and crafts.

A Nogent-le-Rotrou is implanted since 1989 the Drive Command and Civil Security Response 1 (UIISC1), consisting of 570 people specialized in the rescue of disasters. It opens its doors every two years in June, during a weekend where attractions for children abound: ride in a fire truck, demonstrations of dog handlers, route commandos fire demonstrations forest... In July, up Green Tea Festival. This rock music festival is the opportunity to attend numerous concerts of local and national groups in a charged atmosphere.
