The castle of Crémat is located at Nice, in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the heights "west" of the city, near the hill of Magnan, overlooking the left bank of the Var.
In the Roman era, on the site, underground tunnels were set up to store the products of olive and vine cultivation.
In 1906, a wine merchant built a first castle, on the foundations of these old cellars, in the middle of land still devoted to viticulture and benefiting from an exceptional microclimate.
In 1923, the domain, that is to say the castle and its vineyards, is acquired by Irene Bretz, a wealthy American owner of the hotel Negresco on the Promenade des Anglais.
She ordered arrangements with an architectural firm that had already participated in the construction of famous hotels like the Carlton in Cannes. The result is a rococo-style and slightly eccentric Neo-Tuscan building with a machicolated tower and flamboyant decorations. At that time, mundane parties followed at the castle, and a legend claims that the stylist Coco Chanel was inspired by the initials of Cremat Castle to imagine the acronym of his own fashion house.
From the Second War, different owners succeed. The castle is still remarkable and has kept its vocation for wine today. It is at the center of a 7-hectare estate dedicated to producing white and red wines from the Bellet appellation. In parallel, receptions and seminars are hosted.
