Former abbey of Prémontrés founded in Neufmesnil, in the Manche, in the 12th century, the abbey of Blanchelande underwent some transformations during the 14th century. Abandoned in the 17th century following the conflicts of the Hundred Years' War and the wars of the League, the one which notably served as inspiration to Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly for his novel L'Ensorcelée, became a restaurant in the 19th century.
An ephemeral nightclub in the 1990s, the Abbey of Blanchelande now benefits from a listing as a Historic Monument for the remains of its buildings. In particular, there remains the Saint-Nicolas gatehouse and its abbey dwelling, the conciergerie, the church and the old cloister. The whole is surrounded by a park and a garden with a magnificent pond.
