Located at the confluence of the Meuse and Mouzon, 70 km from Épinal, 45 km from Toul and about fifty kilometers from Chaumont (52), Neufchâteau is the first town in the Vosges classified as a Remarkable Heritage Site. Endowed with an exceptional heritage, it welcomes all styles (Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance) and alone represents more than 1000 years of history!
Inhabited since Antiquity, the commune of Neufchâteau developed mainly in the Middle Ages, notably with the construction of its castle in the 11th century. First free city of the duchy in the first half of the 13th century, it has known many occupations over the centuries by the Burgundians. It became French in the 18th century and hosted the equestrian Republican Guard until the beginning of the 20th century.
The town benefits from the "Ville et Métiers d'Art" label and has obtained its 3rd flower under the "Villes et Villages fleuris" label. It is also one of the 100 Most Beautiful Detours in France. A destination not to be missed!
With an exceptional heritage, the center of Neufchâteau is included in a protected area of almost sixty hectares. Inside this perimeter, it is possible to discover the hotel de Houdreville, the current town hall, with its Italian Renaissance staircase and its vaulted cellars, the hotel of Malta, present sub-prefecture and former hospital establishment of the order of Saint John of Jerusalem, the house of Goncourt and its 18th century music pavilion, or the Museum of the Doll which traces the daily life in Lorraine in the nineteenth century.
Neufchâteau also has a rich religious heritage to admire during a long walk in the city of Lorraine. Listed as a Historical Monument, Saint Christopher Church dates from the 13th century. Gothic in style, it has undergone many transformations over the centuries. It hosts a funerary chapel with a vault with twelve hanging keys, a unique stone lace in the country.
Also classified as an historic monument, the Saint-Nicolas church is located on the highest point of the plateau. Superb mix of Romanesque, Renaissance, classical and Gothic styles, it was built in the 12th century on the remains of an older building. You can admire a beautiful Late Gothic Tomb of the 15th century, and a listed organ of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Current court, the former Augustinian convent is a building of the seventeenth century listed historical monument.
While strolling in the city, do not miss to appreciate the high church of XIIIe and XVe centuries with its statue of the anointing of Christ of XVe, the church Saint-Martin of Rouceux, the church Saint- Anatole de Noncourt, the chapel of the retirement home, or the chapel of the Holy Spirit and the old hospital of the thirteenth century.
