Naves

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Corrèze

Small town of Corrèze, Naves takes place just a few kilometers from Tulle. Divided into four valleys, those of Corrèze-Vimbelle, Vine, Solane and Céronne, it is one of the richest communes of the department.

Populated since the Gallo-Roman period, the small town of Naves then included gold and tin mines exploited by the Lemovices. In the sixth century, however, the population moved 1.5 km to create the territory that we know today. In the 13th century, Naves becomes provosted. The provost of Naves appointed by the chapter of Tulle has a religious, administrative and judicial role. His very important power makes him become the "Lord of Naves". This very lucrative office of Provost of Naves is disputed by the big families of Limousin. However, it is necessary to wait until 1790 and the consequences of the French Revolution so that the municipality is officially created. Its attachment to the rail network in the early twentieth century has allowed it to take all its momentum, as well as the face we know today.

From this rich past, there remains a large number of remains to discover the time of a stay in the area.

Things to see and do

Listed as a historic monument and built in the 14th century, the church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens is located on the site of an old Carolingian building. Massif, the current building served in particular to protect the inhabitants of Naves in case of invasion. Inside, it is still possible to admire a Baroque altarpiece made by the brothers Duhamel between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. In carved walnut, it represents biblical scenes on the life of Saint Peter. Impressive, it is twelve meters long and fourteen meters wide. While walking in the building, you will also be able to discover a very beautiful wall fresco.

Known since the 17th century, the archaeological site of Tintignac is now classified as an historic monument. It reveals the superposition of a Gallic shrine and a Gallo-Roman temple. This last site consisted originally of a fanum, a theater, and a court with two basilicas. Open from June to September, the temporary exhibition allows you to admire remains found on site and enjoy exciting tours. On site, visitors will discover a model offering reconstructions of the four known sites, as well as a sound and light of eight minutes around an animated model restoring a Gallic religious ceremony of the 1st century BC.

The Puyaubert geological collection is named after the doctor who has spent years collecting exceptional samples from Corrèze and the rest of the world. A temporary exhibition is offered each year with a new theme, and guided tours are held during opening hours or by appointment.

While strolling, you will also be able to discover the castle of Bach registered with the Historical Monuments or the fountain of the place of the Church, also registered. Be sure to visit the rest area of the Pays de Tulle viaduct, 150 meters high. You will enjoy a unique panorama of the surroundings.
