Nantua is located in the Haut-Bugey, south of the Jura.
The town of nearly 4000 inhabitants, is in a valley carved into the mountain (or gorge) at the edge of a large natural lake, Lake Nantua. The summer temperature is pleasant for swimming.
Altitude passes 477 m at the lake, 1127 m, the top of Mount Signal.
The signature dish is the Nantua sauce, crayfish based sauce that accompanies pike quenelles.
