The town of Naillat is one of the largest in the Creuse, it officially has 668 inhabitants on January 1, 2019, distributed in 43 villages plus the town center. Dominated to the east by the Mount Chabannes, the town overlooks the northern dunois country.
It takes its name from the lords of Naillac, but the spelling has often varied: Analiacum, Nailhac, Naillact. In this family there is a dead William in the army of Joan of Arc in one of the battles for the liberation of Orleans and a Philibert who was grand master of the order of Saint John of Jerusalem (also called Hospitalers).
Before the historic period, the places were already populated since one finds on the territory a menhir and a dolmen.
