The town of Naillat is one of the largest in the Creuse, it officially has 668 inhabitants on January 1, 2019, distributed in 43 villages plus the town center. Dominated to the east by the Mount Chabannes, the town overlooks the northern dunois country.

It takes its name from the lords of Naillac, but the spelling has often varied: Analiacum, Nailhac, Naillact. In this family there is a dead William in the army of Joan of Arc in one of the battles for the liberation of Orleans and a Philibert who was grand master of the order of Saint John of Jerusalem (also called Hospitalers).

Before the historic period, the places were already populated since one finds on the territory a menhir and a dolmen.

Things to see and do

The church is interesting because it is one of the few to present a twisted bell tower (called "steeple twist"). Inside, there are traces of ancient paintings.

Between it and the town hall was set up in the early twentieth century a "stone of the dead", a massive slab of granite surmounted by a metal effigy of the Republic which has since been used at civil burials.

Two rivers cross the territory of the municipality. Along the Brézentine, a small path allows walks without risk of being disturbed (access on the road leading to the village of Pécut). The Cazine has a better landscaped path that starts in the village of Grosbost.

Events and festivities

On July 14, second-hand dealers set up shop on the streets of the town. For some years now, the festival committee has been organizing a lawn tractors race whose fame is spreading farther and farther.

In the town of Colondannes, you can walk in the "Cazes de la Cazine", a beautiful path along the river which, because of a fault, takes wild places in a forest environment.
