Rural village dominated by the volcanic peak of Banne Ordanche, Murat-le-Quaire takes place in the Puy-de-Dôme, more than 1000 meters above sea level. It overlooks magnificently La Bourboule and the valley of the Haute-Dordogne, about forty kilometers from Clermont-Ferrand.
Dominated by a castle in medieval times, the town of Murat-le-Quaire owes its name to the Latin muratus, meaning Surrounded by walls. Its strategic location, at the entrance to the valley, quickly made it a strategic defensive place in the region. Undeveloped until the nineteenth century, this poor and agricultural town has subsequently benefited from the economic influence of the spa located at La Bourboule and Mont-Dore.
Today Murat-le-Quaire is mainly oriented towards tourism thanks to a great cultural offer, as well as an important natural heritage preserved and maintained.
