The Museum of Fine Arts of Mulhouse was founded in 1864 on the initiative of Frédéric Engel-Dollfus and the Industrial Society of the city.
It is housed in an 18th century mansion, the "Villa Steinbach". The site underwent a major renovation in 2017.
The establishment's collection includes works of art dating from the 15th century to Modern Art (early 20th century), representative of French, Flemish, Dutch, German and Italian schools. The period covering the years 1860-1914 constitutes its strong point.
The visit of the Museum of Fine Arts begins with the medieval collections centered on the art of the "Upper Rhine". Three rooms are then devoted to the main schools of the 17th and 18th centuries: Flanders and Holland, France then Italy.
On the ground floor, the different styles of art in France in the 19th century are presented: Orientalism, Italianism, history painting, Alsatian painting…. The artist Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905), originally from the city, is particularly honored. Some contemporary works are also to be admired.
Temporary exhibitions and activities (for adults and children) are offered regularly. Open every day except Tuesday and public holidays. Free entrance. Information on +33 3 89 33 78 11.
