Castle Ventadour (1059), overlooking the deep valleys of Soudeillette and Vine. Subject to significant archeological excavations of the ruins and crystallization, the site of Ventadour in its beautiful natural setting, is now open to the public.
Mecca of the art of the troubadours, Ventadour had the second lord Ebles el cantador (the singer) who made school in his castle. Ventadour Bernard (Bernat or Bernart of Ventadorn), son of slaves, became famous first as a student before becoming the most famous troubadours. His close relationship with the lady forced him to leave Ventadour to join the biggest lover of the arts of the 12th century: Eleanor of Aquitaine. The powerful daughter of the Duke of Aquitaine, wife of King Louis of France the young 7th, welcomed with kindness. Later she married Henry Plantagenet 2nd, descendant of the Dukes of Normandy and future King of England. The fate of Bernard will long be linked to that of his benefactor before he retired to the monastery of Dalon (24).
Established from the 12th century, a monastery of the Order of Cluny installed near the castle. Today, all of this novel, it remains only the church of Saint-Pierre partly rebuilt in the late 15th century.
