Mortrée

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Orne

Small town of Orne, in the Normandy region, Mortrée takes place about thirty kilometers from Alençon, not far from Montmerrei, Belfonds and Macé.

Created by the merger of the municipalities of Bray, Marigny and O, Mortrée also became a new municipality in 2019 by merging with Saint-Hilaire-la-Gérard. Now twinned with the English town of Shrivenham, Mortrée is appreciated for its authenticity and ambient calm. Ideally located for exploring the Orne and its marvels, the Lower Normandy city also has an elegant architectural heritage that testifies to a rich past.

Things to see and do

Listed as a Historic Monument, the Château d'Ô is surely the architectural jewel of the town of Mortrée. Originally owned by François d'O, darling of King Henry III and descendant of Robert d'O, companion of Robert I the Magnificent during his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, it was erected on the remains of an ancient fortress of the eleventh century. The current building dates from the 16th century. Completely restored in the 1970s, it takes the form of a building built on stilts on the island of a pond. The enclosure, rectangular with two towers, contains a courtyard with a gallery upstairs and arcades with sculpted columns. Visitors can also admire an early Renaissance promenade, a Renaissance pavilion, an orangery and a 19th century chapel. The main building, connected to the Gothic-style arrival facade by a long gallery, also reveals inside a living room decorated with 18th century murals. The whole is surrounded by very beautiful gardens with vegetable garden and orchard.

Listed as a Historic Monument, the 19th century Saint-Pierre church is not lacking in interest either, in particular thanks to the wall decoration of the south portal.

During your walk in Mortrée, you can also see the 16th century Fontaine Orin dwelling listed as a Historic Monument.
