Municipality of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in New Aquitaine, Morlaàs is located a dozen kilometers from Pau, around Ouillon and Andoins.
Residence of the viscounts of Béarn and the capital of Béarn between the Xth and the XIIth century, Morlaàs was also occupied by the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean of Jerusalem. The town was known for beating the currency, until the transfer of the case in the sixteenth century to Pau, the neighboring city.
Today, Morlaàs remains an important tourist site because of its proximity to Pau, but also for its rich architectural and historical heritage testifying to an exciting story full of twists and turns. Dynamic, the city also offers a wide range of sports and leisure activities to spend a pleasant stay in the heart of Béarn.
Built at the end of the 11th century, the Saint-André church unveils furniture, paintings and a statue included in the general inventory of cultural heritage. Dating from the same period, the Sainte-Foy church has a rich carved portal. The building is located on via Tolosa, one of France's four pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.
While strolling in the commune, you will also be able to discover the cloister of the Benedictine priory dating partly from the eleventh century with its windows and its works of art, a convent of Jacobins built in the XVIe century with its marble capitals, a protestant temple of the 17th century, or a Cordeliers convent of the late 13th century.
In Bourg-Mayou, it is possible to see remains of ancient fortifications of the eleventh, twelfth and fourteenth centuries. Place Sainte-Foy, do not miss the fountain of Baratnau early seventeenth century, the house of Jeanne d'Albret or the municipal museum. The latter reveals important collections of medieval objects, paintings, weapons, sculptures, keys or various architectural elements testifying to the history of Morlaàs.
The town of Béarn also hosts a set of houses and farms dating from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, and the castle of Baratnau from the mid-sixteenth century. Eleven mills also take place on the town, some of which date from the fourteenth century.
Not far from the city, it is possible to browse the forest of Lahitau.
The local farmers market is held every other Friday in the morning and on Saturday mornings.
The gastronomy fair is held every first weekend of March.
The Morlaàs Pyrenean Festival is organized on the last weekend of August.
In October, local festivities with a parade, children's shows, a carnival, a mass or a dancing tea.
