Nicknamed the 'Venice of the Gâtinais' due its network of canals, 17 bridges and pretty waterside houses, Montargis is a lovely town to wander round.

Visitors can also explore the town's museums: the Musée Girodet with its collections of paintings, drawings and sculptures, and the Musée du Gâtinais, which has objects dating from prehistory and the Gallo-Roman period on display.

Those of you with a sweet tooth can savour the famous local speciality, Montargis pralines: delicious caramelised roasted almonds.

City of Loiret, which is one of the two sub-prefectures, Montargis is located in the natural region of Gâtinais, about thirty kilometers from Nemours. Dubbed the Venice of Gâtinais, particularly because of its 131 bridges and footbridges, Montargis offers a good quality of life and a certain charm.

Over the walks, you can discover beautiful houses with towers and half-timbered, and a typical architecture of the region. Amid these monuments, the presence of a very rich historical and cultural heritage is a plus for the city that once was royal, evidenced by the remains of its castle.

But Montargis is also an important gastronomic heritage, including the famous praline. This small brown grainy shell enveloping a toasted almond was invented in 1636 by a mouth officer. Today, this delicious sweet treat is a gift souvenirs essential when one goes through Montargis.

Rich of a significant historical and cultural heritage, Montargis reveals each corner a monument or a place of beauty.

Classified as an historic monument, the St. Mary Magdalene church has relics from twelfth, fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Restored in the mid-nineteenth century by the famous Viollet-le-Duc, it still has beautiful stained glass windows out of Lobin workshops Tours.

Events and festivities

Montargis is the scene of many events and other cultural and sporting events, to the delight of residents and visitors.

The first Sunday of each month, Montargis welcomes its chips. A market of antiques and flea market popular with bargain hunters and other bargain-hunters.

Montargis stuck the bubble, cartoon festival moved to Montargis in the month of May. At the option of the stands, visitors encounter the best artists in the field, and attend a concert or enjoying BD-hand stalls or not.

From late May to early June, the music festival Sully and Loiret spans several heritage sites of the region, including Montargis. The opportunity to attend classical music concerts performed by internationally known artists as well as young talents.
