Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Corrèze

Saint-Hippolyte:

This locality benefits from good service both by the old national road (between two motorway interchanges) and by the railway. A few companies have settled there.

The first lords of Saint-Hippolyte bore its name: Huguette de Saint Hippolyte married Jacques de Valon (c. 1450) and the barony remained with this family until the French Revolution.

The parish church of Saint-Hippolyte-de-Rome, a noble converted to the Catholic religion under the Emperor Valérien and martyred by him in 261, is located in the old town, accompanied by a small cemetery. It was completely rebuilt in 1495 and underwent, between 1775 and 1783, major restoration work on the western facade. Several interesting statues are exhibited there, such as that representing Saint Anne Trinitarian dated from the end of the 15th century, in polychrome and gilded sculpted stone, and a Pieta in polychrome and gilded limestone. Several arms of local families are represented on the keystones (Braquillange family, Montaignac family). The capitals, in the Gothic style, are sculpted with plant decoration. The corbels, supporting the roof, representing fantastic characters, human or animal, are still in good condition.

A monumental granite cross dating from the 13th century stands next to the presbytery, its lower part representing a sea anchor. A second cross from the 13th century is in the cemetery.

The former town hall-school, built by the local architect Félix Philipponnet, is distinguished by its standard plans circulated at the time of Jules Ferry.

The Garden:

The name of the town is attested in the 12th century in the forms Jardetz and Jardent (jard = hard grass).

The Saint-Côme-et-Saint-Damien church was certainly built at the beginning of the 16th century. The parish has been known for longer (v. 1320). The two-bay bell tower, like many others in Limousin, was rebuilt during the 18th century and, at the end of the 19th century, a diocesan architect proposed a total reconstruction but only part of the work was carried out and the main door was moved from the west facade to the south, on the cemetery enclosure. A small bell tower is located above the choir. The works of the 1970s saw the destruction of the stone vault of the nave as well as the repair of the frame.

The town has many old buildings (built between the beginning of the 17th and the end of the 19th century), including different types of buildings: dwellings, stables and barns (sometimes superimposed), sheepfolds, piggeries but also beautiful ovens bread, wells, water mills and chestnut dryers.

Several monumental crosses can be found on its territory (17th, 18th and 19th centuries), the oldest being near the church.

The centerpiece of the objects preserved in the town is a superb reliquary in gilded copper, a statuette representing Saint Côme, dating from the 15th century, it would contain relics of Saint Côme, Saint Damien and Saint Roch.
